From Road Testing to Race Winning: An Unconventional Path
Most professional racing drivers follow a well-worn path: karting from age eight, junior formula cars through their teens, and a steady climb up the single-seater ladder backed by family investment. My route was rather different.
Starting as a road tester for Autocar Magazine gave me an intimate understanding of vehicle dynamics and the automotive world. Moving into performance car marketing at Jaguar Land Rover deepened those commercial instincts. But it was the founding of MP Media — later acquired by Chime Sports Entertainment — that opened the door to motorsport's inner circle.
The transition to competitive racing came later than most, but the business acumen and networking skills developed over a decade in sports marketing proved invaluable. In motorsport, talent alone isn't enough — you need to understand the commercial mechanics of the sport, how teams operate, and how to build the relationships that open doors.
Winning the 2021 British Endurance Championship in a McLaren GT3 was the culmination of years of preparation, both on and off the track. It proved that there is more than one way to reach the top of this sport.
The lesson? Don't let convention dictate your path. The skills you develop in business can be just as valuable on the starting grid as years of junior formula experience.
